The Sony FE 50 1.2 is one of the fastest 50mm lenses on the market. But how does the 778-gram lens perform in practice? We have worked with Michael Kopal who is Art Director at the photo agency Westend61 and a stock photographer.
FC:
How long have you had this Sony lens?
MK: Since August 2022.
FC:
How do you use the lens most often?
MK: Soulful Portraits on Location. Classic 50mm optics, with pleasure also close ups and because of the good speed also wide open with 1.2 without stress in the quality control at the picture agency.
FC:
From your point of view, what are the strengths and weaknesses of this lens?
MK: Weaknesses? What is it? I bought it because it has no weaknesses, this thing is a heavy hitter, lots and lots of glass. However, this is not really a weakness, you can feel the value. This makes you try even harder. Great colors, back light is no problem, low light. This thing won't let you down in combination with a good camera.
Since I shoot huge raws with the Sony A7R_MARKIV and this good lens, I can very easily crop completely different images from it afterwards if needed, which is pretty cool and reassuring in terms of output.
FC:
Would you recommend this lens to others?
MK: Absolutely. Not cheap, but I have not regretted the purchase for a minute.
Here are two sample images Michael took with the lens and a cropped image for each:
We think this lens is indeed in a class of its own, and if it fits your budget, you're sure to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
