The art of image composition in photography: eight indispensable rules and principles

Skillful image composition distinguishes a real photographer from a "picture snapper". Because only the exciting structure of a motif draws the viewer into the picture, captures his attention and tells the story that you want to convey as a photographer. In this article we will delve deeper into the essence of image composition and introduce the main rules and principles of image composition in photography.

1. rule of thirds and golden section

The so-called rule of thirds is probably the best known and most common principle of image composition: view your subject in the viewfinder through a grid of nine rectangles of equal size, delimited by two horizontal and two vertical lines. According to the rule of thirds, the essential elements of our image should now be placed at one or more of the four intersection points or at least along one of the lines. This is then called the "golden section". This helps to give the image a balanced composition, making it look more natural and appealing.

2. direction of view

Viewing direction can make a significant difference in how the viewer perceives the image. This is because the line of sight can form an invisible line that purposefully directs the viewer's eye through the image. For example, when a human or animal is looking in a certain direction, enough space should be left in the line of sight. This creates an impression of movement and gives the image an additional dimension.

3. line management

Lines are important tools of image composition. You can use them to direct the viewer's eye to important elements of the subject. These lines can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal or even curved. Whether it's a road, a river, a fence, or just the horizon: Lines bring clarity to a good picture and emphasize its message.

4. form frame

Using natural frames can be an effective way to highlight the main subject and add additional depth and background to the image. A window, a gate, an arch or even an opening between two trees or buildings - to name just a few examples - can act as a natural frame.

5. colors and contrasts

Colors and contrasts play another crucial role in image composition. They can also be used to draw the viewer's eye to certain parts of the image or to evoke emotions. Bright and rich colors attract attention, while contrasts help make certain elements of the subject stand out.

6. symmetry and pattern

Symmetry and pattern create a sense of harmony and balance, and thus have an appealing effect on the human eye. They can be used on a variety of layers, from the entire image composition to smaller elements within the image.

7. note background

A clean and unobtrusive background can help the main subject stand out and distract from it as little as possible. So it's important to consider the background as much as the main subject.

Each of these points can help you improve your composition and take more effective, memorable photos. However, they should not be viewed as rigid rules, but rather as guidelines to help you develop and express your own creative vision.

8. rule breaking

But there is also a rule that says that sometimes rules should be broken. Because breaking the rules can also be an elementary tool to make a picture interesting and to direct the viewer's gaze. If we always follow all the rules, the result can sometimes seem a bit boring and monotonous. Therefore, it is sometimes important to try something new and experiment. This can mean, for example, deliberately placing the main subject in the center for once or deliberately incorporating a crooked horizon into an image. That's fine, as long as you use such tricks thoughtfully to create a powerful effect.

Conclusion

Good image composition can help you increase the impact of your images and send your image message accurately to the eye of the viewer. Although there are important rules and principles that should be followed, the best image composition is the one that best expresses your personal creative vision.
