Because only the exciting structure of a motif draws the viewer into the picture, captures his attention and tells the story that you want to convey as a photographer. In this article we will delve deeper into the essence of image composition and introduce the main rules and principles of image composition in photography.

          1. rule of thirds and golden section

The so-called rule of thirds is probably the best known and most common principle of image composition: view your subject in the viewfinder through a grid of nine rectangles of equal size, delimited by two horizontal and two vertical lines. According to the rule of thirds, the essential elements of our image should now be placed at one or more of the four intersection points or at least along one of the lines. This is then called the "golden section". This helps to give the image a balanced composition, making it look more natural and appealing.

© Martin Rügner / Westend61

          2. direction of view

Viewing direction can make a significant difference in how the viewer perceives the image. This is because the line of sight can form an invisible line that purposefully directs the viewer's eye through the image. For example, when a human or animal is looking in a certain direction, enough space should be left in the line of sight. This creates an impression of movement and gives the image an additional dimension.

© Daniel Ingold / Westend61

          3. line management

Lines are important tools of image composition. Because breaking the rules can also be an elementary tool to make a picture interesting and to direct the viewer's gaze. If we always follow all the rules, the result can sometimes seem a bit boring and monotonous. Therefore, it is sometimes important to try something new and experiment. This can mean, for example, deliberately placing the main subject in the center for once or deliberately incorporating a crooked horizon into an image.
